Research is not so bad. Especially nowadays when you could find nearly everything on net, so you doesn't need to spend hours in library. Worst thing is "the initial idea". I do creative writing (as a hobby and as a way of relaxation) and I am quite often stuck with months long writer's blocks. (Kinkmeme)Fanfictions are great method to get rid of them, I found out lately.
And, I love sex and lovey-dovey fics. You need other sort of imagination to write them. ^^
