Most of the noises in old houses can be explained logically. Like leaking pipes, squeaking floor, and so on ... but sometimes ... sudden noises in the dark are terrible! I live in a block of flats build in 40's and I tell you, the door to the tiny lumber-room creeps me out constantly. It refuses to hold shut. It sporadically opens with dull thud sound and when it happens in the middle of the night (especially when I am all alone in the flat), I always jump out.
